The WOC Nurse has a multifaceted role, incorporating the primary components of clinical practice, consultation, education, research and leadership into the care of patients with select disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary and integumentary systems. Utilizing expert knowledge and advanced assessment, the WOC Nurse is accountable for facilitating quality patient outcomes and appropriate resource consumption for patients.  The WOC Nurse is self-directed and acts as an effective leader, catalyst for change and role model for quality nursing practice.

Responsibilities:

  • Applies the nursing process at an advanced level to enhance the clinical outcomes of patients based on a developmentally appropriate Plan of Care with select disorders of the gastrointestinal genitourinary, and integumentary systems.
  • Incorporates education into practice and contributes to the professional development of the health care team relative to the population.
  • Incorporates valid research findings into own practice and facilitates the research-based practice of others.
  • May perform moderate or waived point of care testing per CLIA guidelines.
  • Serves as a consultant to members of the health care team within the organization and community.
  • Appropriately communicates information in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. 
  • Organizes and performs work effectively and efficiently. 
  • Maintains and adjusts schedule to enhance team performance. 
  • Demonstrates standards of performance (ownership, teamwork, communication, compassion) that support patient satisfaction and principles of service excellence.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school; MSN preferred
  • Current RN license to practice professional nursing in State of North Carolina
  • Any WOC employee with an FTE of 0.5 or greater must be actively engaged in the certification process for WOCN certification through the Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses Society within 2 years of being in role
  • Minimum of 3 years nursing experience required
  • Must be able to demonstrate expertise in wound/ostomy/continence nursing
  • Completion of a wound care educational program preferred
